Rice Krispies will always hold a special place in our hearts. Sticky, chewy, crispy, and always made a little better with a drizzle of chocolate, they were a childhood favorite! Nowadays, we like to whip up our own version called Kamut Krispies. These ‘krispies’ are made with whole grain kamut, date syrup, and nut butter, making them a healthier alternative you can feel food about sharing with your family anytime a craving hits.

Recipe Notes

Kamut is light a fluffy and makes a perfect base for these bars. Kamut is a whole grain and offers dietary fiber, protein, and important minerals, often lacking in puffed rice. It has a very mild, nutty flavor that pairs perfectly with peanut butter. Kamut is relatively easy to find at most grocery stores, usually hiding on the LOWEST shelf in the cereal aisle. That said, you can always swap in any of your favorite puffed or oat cereals.

Date Syrup, also referred to as Silan, is relatively new to the culinary scene but is certain to be here for the long haul! Rich and complex in flavor, date syrup is a delicious addition to sweet and savory recipes. Produced from steamed, pressed dates, date syrup contains fewer grams of sugar per serving than traditional sweeteners and contains minerals such as iron, potassium, copper, manganese, and magnesium. Date syrup is suited for all styles of cooking and baking, and even drizzled on top of yogurt or fruit.

Coconut oil is used to “set” the bars and melted chocolate. If you don’t have on hand, or enjoy the flavor, you can easily omit. The bars may have less structure, but will not lack in chewy texture or flavor!

Kamut Krispies

An upgraded spin on a childhood favorite, these crispy squares are quick, delicious, and a pinch to make!

  • 3 cups puffed kamut (dry cereal)
  • 1/2 cup cashew butter can sub with any favorite nut butter
  • 1/2 cup date syrup or honey
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1/4 cup chocolate chips for drizzle


  • Add cashew butter, syrup, coconut oil, and salt to a large pot. Heat over low, stirring frequently, until mixture is smooth.
  • Remove from heat and stir in puffed kamut, mixing until well coated.
  • Pour mixture into a greased or lined 9×9 baking tin and press firmly into shape.
  • Melt chocolate and drizzle over the top of the mixture.
  • Place pan into the freezer for 15-20 minutes to set, prior to slicing into 12 squares.
